Cityscapes
'Cityscapes' is urban equivalent of Landscapes. Depicting city scenes has been existing in paintings since Roman Ages to Midlle Ages but they were merely used as background scenes for portraits. Later on post 16th century they were functioned for documentation purpose. The physical aspects of the city were taken down in birds eye view on the two dimensional space. The prominence of Cityscapes as a theme started appearing from 19th century. IndianArtCollectors in its current exhibition is intending to highlight the works of three such talented artists who has a common interest and admiration towards 'Cityscapes' in their paintings.
Dilip Chaudhury like a true artist has carved a niche for himself by creating some marvellous cityscapes of abundant beauty and character. Using fine nuances of colour, light and shades, besides a strong sense of perspective, Dilip has executed truly riveting canvases, each of which has a unique story to narrate. They are not flat, architectural depictions but have grandeur, movement, people and therefore, life infused into them. His latest works captures, with skilled brush-strokes, the charm and character of Kolkata, which are constantly reinventing themselves, without losing out on their original essence of character. These are real portraits of a city, pulsating with action, mirroring its strengths and weaknesses in a poetic language. The city of Kolkata is depicted with a profusion of monsoons, abundant populace and heritage structures. Sometimes Dilip Chaudhury uses his imagination to highlight a simple Rickshaw puller and makes stylistic compositions from unusual angles, which succeed in enthralling the viewer.
Jiaur Rahman, a well known water-colourists has a delightful renderings of nature. He has wonderfully captured the cityscapes, aiming to portray scenes that are characteristic of Kolkata. His works represent his close association with Bengal. Aiming to portray scenes that are characteristic of Kolkata, we can see a keen desire to immortalize the beauty through his works. Rahman’s watercolours posses a misty, almost rain-washed, and an endearing quality. After giving his first solo in Ahmedabad in 2001. Since then, he has credited to his name seven solo shows. His works have been featured in several group shows. He has bagged some prestigious awards like the Camlin Art Foundation Award, Kolkata in 2002, and the Nokia Asia Pacific International Arts Award, New Delhi in 2001.
Beginning his journey with landscapes and portraits, Somnath Bothe turns towards cityscapes at later stage. His close relationship with village during his childhood days was reflected in his early paintings, which disappeared when he started understanding the new sensitivities of city-life. The blend of these different environments and cultures started flowing in his paintings. They were subdued and quiet in nature. Whereas his colour schemes are modern and flashy. The subjects of his paintings constitutes the fusion of rainy season and historical places. The usage of bright, vibrant colours reflects his intentions of depicting nostalgic past.
We are sure you must have noticed how each artist has executed the sublime moody cityscapes using varied techniques and individualistic skills. Resulting their paintings to be highly atmospheric with urban streets.
